Internships for Graduate Students
Human Rights Watch offers academic semester and summer internships for
graduate students in our New York, London, Los Angeles, Washington, DC, Brussels, and Berlin offices.
Interns may be placed in one of the following regional or thematic programs at HRW: Africa, the Americas (does not include US or Canada), Asia, Europe & Central Asia, Middle East & North Africa, United States, Arms, Children's Rights, Women's Rights, HIV/AIDS & Human Rights, Business & Human Rights, Refugees, Emergency Response, Terrorism/Counterterrorism, International Justice, and Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual & Transgender Rights. Internships also are available with the Advocacy, Communications & Press, Development & Outreach, Legal & Policy, Human Resources and Finance & Administration departments as well as the International Film Festival.
DESCRIPTION:
Graduate interns monitor human rights developments in various countries, draft reports on human rights conditions, and engage in advocacy efforts aimed at curtailing human rights violations. Internships
are unpaid, except for certain Funded Graduate Internships which are associated with specific universities. These internships are described below. Academic credit and/or funding may be sought through your University or academic
program.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Applicants should be well-organized, self-motivated and reliable, with a strong interest in international human
rights. Relevant coursework is highly desirable, and knowledge of foreign languages
is a plus. Computer skills (i.e., Microsoft Office, Internet applications)
are required.

FUNDED GRADUATE INTERNSHIPS:
The following paid Graduate Internships are available at Human Rights Watch:
- I.F. Stone Fellowships: The I.F. Stone Fellowships are available to students at the Graduate School of Journalism
at the University of California, Berkeley.
- Klatsky Summer Fellowships: Klatsky Summer Fellowships are available to students
at the School of Law at Case Western Reserve University.
- McGill Human Rights Summer Internship: The McGill Summer Internship is
available to students at McGill University's Faculty of Law in Montreal through
its International Human Rights Internship Programme.
- Everett Public Service Summer Internship Program: Each year, the Everett Public Service Internship Program places six summer interns in the New York and Washington, DC offices of HRW. Internships last 10 weeks with a modest stipend to offset expenses.
Applicants must be current students at (or immediate graduates of) U.S. colleges or graduate schools, with a minimum of two semesters completed, possess valid work authorization within the United States, and must be able to attend all scheduled Everett program events.
- Fordham Law School Externship Program: Each semester, the Fordham Law School Externship Program places two law students in the New York office of HRW. Externships last 10 weeks for about 14 to 16 hours per week and pay a stipend of approximately $2,000.
This externship opportunity is available to current Fordham Law School students through the Crowley International Human Rights Program.
- Roland Algrant Summer Internship: The Roland Algrant Summer Internship, a 10-week summer placement with HRW's Children's Rights Division ("CRD"), is based in HRW's Brussels office and pays a stipend of $4,500.
This internship is open to law students, law graduates, and graduate students with expertise in international human rights law, refugee law, children's rights, public policy, public health, or other relevant fields of study.
