Jamaica - land of sea, sand and sun. And a prime example of the complexities and dangers of
economic globalization for the world's developing countries. Utilizing Jamaica as an example of
a country which has been under the tutelage of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and other
international lending institutions for nearly twenty-five years, this searing film dissects the
"mechanism of debt" that is destroying local agriculture and industry in Third World countries
while substituting sweat-shops and cheap imports. With a voice-over narration written by
Jamaica Kincaid, adapted from her non-fiction book A Small Place, LIFE AND DEBT is an
unapologetic look at the "new world order" from the point of view of Jamaican workers, farmers,
and government and policy officials who see the reality of globalization from the ground up. With
music by Mutabaruka, Ziggy Marley and the Melody Makers, Sizzla, Bob Marley, Buju Banton,
Yami Bolo. For more information on this film, please visit the film's own website at www.lifeanddebt.org
