Anand Patwardhan


Anand Patwardhan studied received a B.A. in English Literature from Bombay University in 1970. He earned a Master Degree in Communications from McGill University in 1982. Patwardhan has been an activist since she was a student -- having participated in the anti- Vietnam War movement; being a volunteer in Caesar Chavez' United Farm Worker's Union; working in Kishore Bharati, a rural development and education project in Central India; and fighting for housing rights of the urban poor.

Patwardhan's many film credits include: BUSINESS AS USUAL (1971), on fund- raising for Bangkadesh refugees; WAVES OF REVOLUTION (1974), on the anti- corruption movement in bihar which led to a state of emergency being declare in india; PRISIONERS OF CONSCIENCE (1978), about political prisoners in India before, during, and after the emergency; the award-winning A TIME TO RISE (1981), on the efforts of Indian immigrant farm-workers in Canada to form a union; the award-winning BOMBAY OUR CITY (1985), on the daily battle for survival of Bombay's slum dwellers; the award-winning IN MEMORY OF FRIENDS (1990), on the efforts of a group of Sikhs and Hindus to rebuild communal harmony in strife-hit Runjab; the award-winning IN THE NAME OF GOD (1992), about the rise of Hindu fundamentalism as reflected in the temple/mosque conflict in Ayodhya which resulted in nationwide carnage; and the award- winning FATHER, SON, AND HOLY WAR (1995), on the patriarchal roots of violence in India and the relationship between male insecurity and religious conflict.
