Canary Season
Eugeny Mihaylov | Bulgaria | 1994 | 133 min.

Set in communist Bulgaria during the 1960s-1970s, Canary Season unfolds as a mother recounts her life to her son in order to help him understand why she has not been able to be a good parent. Tragic and brutal, her story, like so many others during this period in Bulgarian history, is a tale of the twisted forces of a Communist regime that tore families apart, shredded hope, and imprisoned a generation. Gritty in its realism, this drama features tour de force performances by Paraskeva Djukelova as the older Lily, and Planena Getova as the young Lily.
