Borders

An arbitrary line drawn between nations that is designed to protect, separate and denote the sovereignty of nations. Many borders are no more than artificial barriers erected as a result of the horrors of war and the reality of a perpetual state of conflict. These complex mazes attempt to conceal the carnage and pain which was their creation.

In this riveting documentary special, acclaimed director Eran Riklis and award-winning producer Nurit Kedar, bring to light several of the most emotionally charged stories across the borders of Israel and the Palestinian Authority, Lebanon, Syria and Jordan. The program presents a world of paradoxes : the profiteering, violence, death, prostitution, love, smuggling and war that is the brutal reality of borders.

BORDERS portrays poignant personal accounts and testimonials from those whose lives have been forever changed by these barriers: the shell-shocked veteran who visits the place of his affliction, the "shouting fence" that is the meeting point and only form of communication possible for a Druze family torn apart by politics, the sleek and profiteering merchant, the mercenary weapons smuggler, cross-border workers who wake up at dawn, the musician soldier who refuses to succumb to the reality surrounding him, the unimaginable cooperation of soldiers from the Palestinian Authority and Israel, a Lebanese family that lives as captives between borders, and a mother who lost her family and "adopts" a soldier.

BORDERS is an emotionally stirring display of human drama told through the eyes of those who live under these extraordinary circumstances. " ... and the border shall divide but never separate us."
