Human Rights Watch Delegation to the World Conference against Racism, Racial Discrimination, Xenophobia and Related Intolerance Reed Brody, Advocacy Director Reed Brody directs HRW's campaigns to halt government abuse. At the 1993 UN World Conference on Human Rights in Vienna, he was elected to the NGO Liaison Committee and chosen to coordinate "lobbying" for the 2,700 NGO representatives present. His work on the cases against Chile's Augusto Pinochet and Chad's Hisséne Habrè was recently featured in a French TV documentary "The Dictator Hunter." He has led United Nations teams investigating massacres in the Democratic Republic of Congo and monitoring human rights in El Salvador. Previously, he was Director of the International Human Rights Law Group and Executive Secretary of the International Commission of Jurists. His articles have appeared in the Washington Post, the International Herald Tribune, le Monde, El País, the Asian Wall Street Journal, the Miami Herald, the Far Eastern Economic Review and The Economist
LaShawn Jefferson joined HRW in 1993. She has written extensively on violence and discrimination against women in the Americas. She is the author/editor of numerous reports on women's human rights, including, "Rape in Haiti: A Weapon of Terror"; "No Guarantees: Sex Discrimination in Mexico's Maquiladora Sector"; "A Job or Your Rights: Continued Sex Discrimination in Mexico's Maquiladora Sector"; and "Seeking Protection: Addressing Sexual and Domestic Violence in Tanzania's Refugee Camps." LaShawn was a member of the six-person HRW delegation to the NGO Conference and the U.N. Fourth World Conference on Women in Beijing, China, in 1995. She has conducted documentation training workshops with women's rights activists in the U.S., Latin America, and South Africa.
