Introduction:
Since May 2, 987,000 internally displaced persons (IDPs) fleeing fighting
between Pakistani armed forces and Taliban militants have been registered by
Pakistani authorities. Theses IDPs join some 550,000 displaced in earlier
fighting. The UN High Commissioner for Refugees, Antonio Guterres, described
this as “a massive, massive displacement in the world today.” Human Rights
Watch considers this the largest displacement of people seen in Pakistan
since the partition of India in 1947. Human Rights Watch visited IDP camps
in Mardan, Swabi and along the Grand Trunk Road in the North West Frontier
Province.
