On estime à 87 millions le nombre d'enfants travaillant de par le monde. Pour la plupart, ces enfants sont employés comme travailleurs domestiques. Travaillant dans des maisons privées, isolés et cachés, les enfants sont exploités et victimes d'abus. Pour la plupart, ils sont surchargés de tâches, sous-payés et sans protection. En raison de leur jeune âge, de leur dépendance à leur employeur et de leur isolement, ces enfants sont particulièrement vulnérables face aux abus physiques, psychiques, sexuels, au travail forcé ainsi qu'au trafic humain.

Des négociations démarrent actuellement à l'Organisation Internationale du Travail pour protéger les travailleurs domestiques : une opportunité unique pour renforcer les mesures de protection des enfants.

Cette soirée débat vous permettra d'en savoir plus sur les réalités des enfants travailleurs domestiques et sur le potentiel des instruments juridiques existants.

Of an estimated 87 million children working worldwide, more are employed in domestic work than any other sector. Working in private homes and hidden from the public eye, child domestic workers are among the most exploited and abused workers in the world. They are often overworked, underpaid, and unprotected. Their young ages, isolation, and dependence on their employer make them particularly vulnerable to physical and sexual abuse, trafficking, forced labour, and the worst forms of child labour.

Beginning in June 2010, members of the International Labor Organization will begin negotiation of a new ILO instrument for domestic workers, providing a rare and critical opportunity to strengthen protections for this historically neglected and undervalued sector of child labour.

You are invited to learn more about the realities of child domestic work, and the potential of the new ILO instrument to better protect the rights of domestic workers and address their unique circumstances.
