Internship Description: The Asia division of Human Rights Watch (HRW) is seeking to recruit a graphic design intern to produce custom maps and graphics. This internship would be suitable for a recent graduate or junior-level designer who seeks to gain experience in an international organization and to build their portfolio of published work. Most of the graphics required will be stock pieces, e.g. standard country and city maps, based on a pre-determined organizational style. (See http://www.hrw.org/en/node/84624/section/4.) A time commitment of two days per week for a minimum of three months is required. Scheduling and work location can be flexible. A November 2009 start date is preferred, although a December 2009 start date may be accommodated. Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis, therefore candidates are encouraged to apply as soon as possible.

This internship is unpaid. Human Rights Watch will reimburse interns' travel and lunch expenses in accordance with HRW policy. Students are often able to arrange academic credit, as HRW internships often offer direct exposure to the workings of an international human rights organization, close supervision by the HRW staff, interaction with other US and international organizations, and opportunities to attend lectures, trainings and special events relating to human rights. Students should check with their individual academic institutions for requirements.

Qualifications: Applicants should be well-organized, self-motivated and extremely reliable, with excellent attention to detail.  Applicants should have an excellent knowledge of the Adobe suite. Applicants with experience designing for the internet and having proven experience with Dreamweaver, JavaScript or Flash, are especially encouraged to apply. Applicants must be comfortable accommodating numerous requests for detailed changes and be able to devise simple and effective design solutions. Ideally applicants will have an interest in human rights in Asia. Shortlisted candidates will be asked to follow a brief and complete a specified piece. Interviews will be conducted thereafter.

How to Apply: Please apply immediately by sending a letter of interest, a resume/online portfolio, and names or letters of reference (no calls or email inquiries, please) to internuk@hrw.org.  Please use "Asia Design Internship Winter 2009-2010" as the subject of your email. Only complete applications will be reviewed. It is preferred that all materials be submitted via email, however, applications can also be sent to:
