INTERNSHIP OPENING
Asia Division – Indonesia
New York Office
Winter 2009
Apply Immediately
Internship Description: The Asia Division of Human Rights Watch (HRW) is seeking an intern to help provide administrative and some, albeit minimal, research assistance to our research fellow covering Indonesia. This will involve filing, updating contact databases, conducting web research, corresponding with NGOs and journalists in Europe and Southeast Asia, and providing translation assistance. The internship will be at least three months in duration with two days per week required. A November start date is preferred although a December start date may be accommodated. Scheduling can be fairly flexible.
This internship is unpaid. Students are often able to arrange academic credit, as HRW internships often offer direct exposure to the workings of an international human rights organization, close supervision by the HRW staff, interaction with other US and international organizations and foreign and domestic government officials, and opportunities to attend lectures, trainings and special events relating to human rights. Students should check with their individual academic institutions for requirements.
Qualifications: Applicants should be well-organized, self-motivated and reliable, with excellent attention to detail. Applicants must be proficient in English as well as in written and spoken Bahasa Indonesia. Translation experience is desirable. Applicants should have an interest in and knowledge of human rights in Indonesia, as well as a familiarity with NGOs working on human rights issues in the Southeast Asian region. Shortlisted candidates will be invited to an interview and will be asked to take a short translation test. Applicants with an academic background in human rights are especially encouraged to apply.
How to Apply: Please apply immediately by sending a letter of interest, resume, and names or letters of reference (no calls or email inquiries, please) to internuk@hrw.org. Please use "Indonesia Internship-Winter 2009" as the subject of your email. Only complete applications will be reviewed. It is preferred that all materials be submitted via email, however, applications can also be sent to:
