INTERN
Development and Outreach Program
(New York Office)
Fall 2008 / Apply immediately
Internship Description:
The Development and Outreach Department is seeking an intern to provide special event assistance in preparation of our November 2008 Voices for Justice Annual Dinner Tour and other departmental activities. Responsibilities associated with events include, but are not limited to, assisting staff with event logistics; site visits; support including vendor research and sourcing; aiding the coordination of printed materials; writing acknowledgment letters and other correspondence; updating and maintaining files; assisting with general research and contacting supporters and other administrative tasks. The intern will report to the Events Manager for North America.
Undergraduate internships are primarily administrative and clerical in nature, but other projects can be assigned as they arise and match the student's interests and abilities.
The internship is unpaid. Students are often able to arrange academic credit, as HRW internships often offer direct exposure to the workings of an international human rights organization, close supervision by the HRW staff, interaction with other U.S. and international organizations and foreign and domestic government officials, and opportunities to attend lectures, trainings, and special events relating to human rights. Students should check with their individual academic institutions for requirements.
Qualifications:
This internship would be especially suited for individuals interested in special events, fundraising, and outreach within a human rights context. Applicants should be well-organized, self-motivated and reliable, flexible, and ideally have an interest in international human rights. First-rate time- management skills and the ability to work well under pressure are essential. Excellent computer skills (i.e., Microsoft Office, Internet applications) are required. Attention to detail, a professional telephone manner, fluency in English and solid writing skills are necessary. Experience in an administrative role is desirable, as well as previous events or fundraising-related experience. Both students and non-students are welcome to apply.
How to Apply:
Please apply immediately by sending a letter of interest, resume, names or letters of reference, and a brief, unedited writing sample (500 words or less) to Rachel Strader at rachel.strader@hrw.org. Please use “Events Internship – New York” as the subject of your email. Only complete applications will be reviewed. It is preferred that all materials be submitted via email. If emailing is not possible, send materials (please do not split a submission between email and regular post) to:
