Human Rights Watch Canada offers an unpaid internship program for undergraduate students, graduate students and volunteers two times a year: winter/spring (Jan. - Apr.) and fall (Sept.- Dec.) An administrative internship with our advocacy subcommittee is offered once a year, starting in January. Internship opportunities are available for individuals interested in learning about our work and making a contribution to our organization in our Toronto office.

Please keep in mind that the Toronto office is primarily a fundraising office that does limited advocacy work. There are NO research based internship positions in the Toronto office and no program divisions.

Interns will be responsible for providing administrative support to our full-time staff in Toronto and will assist with the planning of our outreach events such as our Annual Dinner (fall) and Film Festival (winter). Duties are two-fold and can include the following:

• Administrative support: answering the phone, database entry, minute-taking, drafting letters and emails, filing, internet research, etc.
• Event planning support: maintaining invitation lists; creating spreadsheets; coordinating volunteers; organizing mailings; liaising with vendors, etc.

The Advocacy Subcommittee Intern is responsible for providing administrative support related to our advocacy efforts. This is primarily of an administrative nature and includes: minute- taking, drafting letters and emails, filing, internet research, etc. The intern will report both to the Toronto Office and the Advocacy Co-Chairs.

Toronto office interns are asked to work a minimum of 15 hours per week, 3 days a week for 4 months. The advocacy intern is required to spend a minimum of one day a week in the office and must be present at ALL advocacy subcommittee meetings.

If you are interested in interning with Human Rights Watch Canada, please send your resume to Alison Thornton at thornta@hrw.org or call our office at 416-322-8448.

UPDATE: Please note that we are no longer accepting applications for the Winter Administrative Advocacy internship. Please check back for further information.
