    All parents want their children to attend safe schools where the focus is on learning and students of all races are treated fairly. Unfortunately, after months of investigation into the use of corporal punishment in Mississippi, including interviews with dozens of parents, children and educators, we have discovered that neither is true in many of Mississippi's public schools.

At the Millennium Summit in 2000, governments reaffirmed ambitious commitments—to ensure that by 2015, every child around the world is able to attend and complete primary school, and to ensure that by 2005, as many girls as boys would be attending school. More than eight years after the summit, school attendance has increased in many parts of the world, but education remains beyond the reach of many millions of the world’s children, particularly girls. Human Rights Watch campaigns to end violence, discrimination, and other factors that deny children their right to education.

    Human Rights Watch urges the Jackson, MS Public School District Board of Trustees to respect the rights of all children in Jackson public schools, and refrain from reinstating corporal punishment.in the Jackson Public School District. Corporal punishment in public schools is prohibited by international law and is illegal in public schools in at least 100 countries. Furthermore, the overwhelming trend among cities and states throughout the US is toward complete abolition of corporal punishment in public schools.
