Human Rights Watch (“HRW”) is seeking highly-qualified applicants for the position of Kuwait Development and Outreach Consultant to facilitate events leading up to and including the Kuwait Annual Dinner.
Primary responsibilities and tasks performed:
- Oversee the production of fundraising, outreach and cultivation events in Kuwait, with a primary focus on HRW’s Annual Voices for Justice Dinner in Kuwait in spring 2014;
- Develop and manage the Kuwait Annual Dinner Committee to produce the Voices for Justice event in Kuwait and work closely with the Committee’s leadership;
- Build relationships with Council at Large Members and Annual Dinner Committee members;
- Provide an outreach strategy that will outline a method for engaging contacts, identifying new targets, and increase attendance at the annual dinner by at least 25%;
- Represent the work of HRW to existing and prospective supporters; lay the groundwork for a Kuwait base of financial support by soliciting major gifts and general support funds from donors in Kuwait;
- Research, identify, cultivate, service and solicit new prospects, existing donors and Kuwait Council at Large Members; create and track donor lists, fundraising and expenses;
- Propose a strategy to maintain current donors and develop their commitment to HRW and partner with the MENA Development Director to advance plans for strengthening HRW’s local presence and support networks in Kuwait;
- Develop and maintain HRW’s relationships with its key local NGO partners involved in any of the fundraising or outreach efforts;
- Work with the development, legal, finance, and operations staff to research and secure potential legal requirements for the organization of events;
- Collaborate with HRW’s Committee Directors across the globe and help direct special development initiatives in Kuwait;
- Design a calendar of events including for example, a film screening, book event and university panel discussion; and
- Facilitate the post-event evaluation and other follow-up activities and initiating a debriefing from which an action plan will be developed outlining next steps.
Key Deliverables:
- Provide the organization with a communications and outreach plan for Kuwait FY14;
- Hold regular meetings with the Council Members at Large;
- Provide a calendar of events;
- Provide the organization with a donor development strategy;
- Secure venues and external vendors for the dinner by 31 January 2014;
- Motivated and successful HRW Voices for Justice Annual dinner committee committed to promoting the dinner and raising funds for the annual dinner in Kuwait; and
- Successful execution of the HRW Voices for Justice Annual Dinner in Kuwait in spring 2014, including meeting target revenue goals.
Key skills, technical background, and experience required:
- Fundraising or relationship management experience, with proven success in creating and managing fundraising programs in Gulf countries is highly desirable.
- Experience managing high-level relationships is required.
- Demonstrated experience overseeing large events is highly desirable.
- Demonstrated commitment to human rights and/or international issues and the capacity to master and represent the mission and programs of HRW is essential.
- Excellent oral and written communications skills in English and Arabic are required.
- Strong interpersonal skills in order to work collaboratively within HRW as well as with local partners, government officials and external media partners are required.
- Strong technology skills, including experience with donor databases (preferably the Raiser’s Edge) and knowledge of social media are desirable.
- A willingness to maintain spreadsheets, write correspondence, and do some degree of administrative work is a must.
- An entrepreneurial spirit and the discipline to work independently, but also the ability to function as a member of a development team is highly desirable.
