SAMPLE LANGUAGE FOR LETTERS TO THE U.S. DEPARTMENT OF LABOR
(Date)
Honorable Alexis Herman
I am writing to express my concern about widespread sex discrimination in Mexicoµs maquiladora industry practiced primarily by U.S.-based companies. A report by the Human Rights Watch Womenµs Rights Watch Project reveals widespread abuse of womenµs human rights in the maquiladora industry through sex discrimination.
I call upon the Department of Labor to oppose abuses by U.S. companies abroad. Specifically, I urge the Department of Labor to use its leadership position with U.S. corporations to press them to adopt fair labor standards, including prohibitions against all forms of sex discrimination in their operations in Mexico and elsewhere. The Department of Labor can play a critical role in promoting corporate responsibility, as well as providing assistance and advice on how to implement and monitor equal treatment policies for all employees. It is important that the U.S. send a clear signal condemning pregnancy-based sex discrimination and other discriminatory labor practices perpetuated by U.S.-based companies in Mexico and in other countries.
Thank you in advance for your consideration. I look forward to receiving your reply.
Sincerely,
(Your Name)
