At the 1995 World Conference on Women in Beijing, over 40,000 women from around the world demanded that their governments improve women's status and respect women's rights. Five years later, are women better off? Do laws and practices still condone or excuse violence against women? Human Rights Watch has spent the past five years investigating the high levels of violence against women around the world and the role governments play in fueling that violence.
