Twenty-nine-year old Ramsan Rasayev, recovering from his wounds in Sunzha District Hospital in Ingushetia, December 20, 1999. Ramsan alleged he was detained by Russian soldiers at the Assinovski checkpoint, the main border crossing with Ingushetia on December 16, 1999, and severely beaten throughout the night. He stated that the soldiers at the checkpoint beat him with their automatic rifles, made him fight a conscript soldier, kicked him in the genitals, and repeatedly stabbed him before an Ingush police officer intervened and secured his release.
