NATO, E.U. Should Challenge Russia on Chechnya
(Brussels, May 27, 2002) Russia's conduct in Chechnya stands in the way of full integration into Western institutions, Human Rights Watch said today. In letters to NATO and the European Union, which are holding summits with Russia on May 28, Human Rights Watch said that the Russian military's record of abuse in Chechnya undermines the core values and strategic goals of both institutions.

(Moscow, May 21, 2002) President Bush should speak strongly and publicly about human rights violations in Chechnya while visiting Russia, Human Rights Watch said today.

(April 15, 2002) -- Persons in Chechnya continue to "disappear" in the custody of Russian forces, Human Rights Watch charged today. Days after the U.N. Commission on Human Rights in Geneva introduced a resolution on the situation in Chechnya, Human Rights Watch released a new 49-page report, Last Seen…: Continued "Disappearances" in Chechnya, detailing 87 cases of "disappearances" carried out between September 2000 and January 2002.

(April 2, 2002) -- Spanish officials should have serious discussions with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Ivanov about Russian abuses in Chechnya, Human Rights Watch urged on the eve of Ivanov's visit to Madrid.

New Killings and "Disappearances" in Chechnya
(March 23, 2002) -- Russian forces on sweep operations in Chechnya continue to commit serious violations, Human Rights Watch said today. Fourteen witnesses have told Human Rights Watch researchers in the field about torture and ill-treatment, forced disappearances, and the discovery of the corpses and burned remains of nine people that took place during the March 6-11 sweep operation in Staryi Atagi, 25 miles south of Grozny.

(March 14, 2002) -- The Russian government has once again refused to comply with the requirements of the United Nations Commission on Human Rights, which must firmly act to end the ongoing atrocities in Chechnya, Human Rights Watch said today.

Abuse and Lawlessness Continue in Chechnya
(New York, February 28, 2002) Russian forces in Chechnya arbitrarily detain, torture, and kill civilians in a climate of lawlessness, Human Rights Watch said today. In a 51-page report, Human Rights Watch details a series of military sweep operations during which it found hundreds of men were arbitrarily detained, dozens tortured, and at least six extrajudicially executed.

(New York, June 14, 2001) U.S. President George W. Bush should make Chechnya a top priority in his summit talks with President Vladimir Putin, Human Rights Watch said today. In a June 8 letter to President Bush, Human Rights Watch urged him to press for robust investigations into Russian abuses in Chechnya and access to the region for international monitors.

Russia Buries Evidence of Atrocities
(New York, May 15, 2001) -- Russian authorities have literally buried evidence of extra-judicial executions in Chechnya, according to Human Rights Watch. In a 24-page report, Burying the Evidence: The Botched Investigation into a Mass Grave in Chechnya, released today, the organization documents the Russian government’s botched investigation of a mass gravesite discovered in late February 2001.

Human Rights Watch charged today that the Russian government's investigation into the mass grave site discovered in late February near the main Russian military base in Chechnya has been absolutely inadequate. The fifty-one bodies found show evidence of having been extrajudicially executed and bear unmistakable signs of torture. .

Russian Investigation of Mass Grave Not Credible Effort
International Investigation Only Hope for Determining Truth

On February 24, a mass grave was discovered in the village of Dachny (also called Zdorovye), located less than a kilometer from the main Russian military base in Chechnya. The corpses of fifty-one people were eventually found there; nineteen bodies were identified, at least sixteen of which were the remains of people who were last seen alive in the custody of Russian federal forces. Most were in civilian clothing, some were blindfolded, and many had their hands or feet bound.

U.N. Commission: Back Strong Chechnya Resolution
Human Rights Watch applauded today's introduction by the European Union of a resolution on the situation in the Chechnya region of the Russian Federation at the U.N. Commission on Human Rights, but called on other governments to strengthen the text and join as co-sponsors. The Commission is scheduled to vote on the resolution on Wednesday, April 18.

Dear Commission Member: As you may remember, in early February we wrote to you urging that your government support a new resolution on Chechnya at the current session of the United Nations Commission on Human Rights. Tuesday, April 10, is the final day for tabling such a resolution, and we are writing once again to underscore how critical it is for your government to cosponsor a resolution that deplores the serious violations of international human rights and humanitarian law that continue on a routine basis, as well as the Russian government's utter non-compliance with the terms of last year's resolution.
