End Burma's Use of Child Soldiers

Sample letter for Foreign Ministers and/or foreign ambassadors to Burma
(download following letter as MSWord Document)

Dear Ambassador/Foreign Minister:

I am deeply concerned about reports of widespread forced recruitment and use of children by Burma's national army. An extensive investigation by Human Rights Watch recently found that children as young as eleven are forced into the army, brutally treated during training, and forced to participate in active combat and carry out human rights abuses against civilians. Burma's army is the largest user of child soldiers in the world, and 35 to 45 percent of its new recruits may be under the age of eighteen.

I urge you to publicly condemn Burma's use of child soldiers, and to use diplomatic and other appropriate means to press Burma's State Peace and Development Council to immediately end all recruitment and use of children under the age of eighteen, and to cooperate with international agencies such as UNICEF to demobilize all children currently in the army.

Sincerely yours,
