Child Soldiers Ratification Campaign

Mexico

The minimum age for voluntary recruitment in Mexico was only 16, but the government has supported a "straight-18" position in international fora. The new government of President Fox has been making new human rights commitments, which might lead to this policy being reconsidered. There have been indications that children are recruited by armed groups and "paramilitaries", but these reports have been relatively isolated and difficult to confirm. Mexico signed the Optional Protocol on 7 September 2000.

Success! On March 15, 2002, Mexico ratified the optional protocol to the Convention on the Rights of the Child on the involvement of children in armed conflicts.
