Uzbekistan: Dissident in Psychiatric Detention Tajikistan's Parliamentary Elections
(New York, February 25, 2000)--Six parties will contest elections to the lower chamber of a new bicameral
parliament in Tajikistan on February 27, 2000. The vote will mark the first multiparty elections since the June

Nurmamedov (pictured right). Nurmamedov, 57, is one of the only remaining Turkmen opposition figures not in
jail or exile. The arrest follows his public criticism of the recent decision to extend indefinitely Turkmen

The report, Class Dismissed: Discriminatory Expulsions of Muslim Students, describes the government's zero-tolerance policy toward Muslim students who wear headscarves and beards. Government officials have unceremoniously expelled the students from
schools and universities. Most of those expelled were girls and young
