Collaborative Efforts

In order to enhance the effectiveness of its efforts, Human Rights Watch seeks to coordinate its efforts with other concerned international and country-based non-governmental organizations as well as with professional associations engaged in advocacy on behalf of academics, teachers and students. Recent collaborative efforts have included a 1996 campaign on behalf of Egyptian professor Nasr Hamed Abu Zeid, spearheaded by the Middle East division of Human Rights Watch, and a 1998 campaign on behalf of imprisoned Chinese scientists, co-sponsored by several U.S.-based scientific societies.

The academic freedom program maintains regular contact with a number of professional associations actively engaged in human rights advocacy, including the Science and Human Rights Program of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the Committee on Human Rights of the New York Academy of Sciences, the Committee of Concerned Scientists, the Network of Concerned Historians, the Committee on Academic Freedom in the Middle East and North Africa (CAFMENA) of the Middle East Studies Association, the World University Service, and Education International Human Rights Watch seeks to collaborate with other professional associations engaged in human rights advocacy and to encourage participation by groups not currently active in such work, particularly professional associations in the humanities and social sciences which, at present, are underrepresented in the field.

Individuals or organizations interested in collaborating with Human Rights Watch in monitoring, exposing and combating violations of academic freedom can contact the program by sending an e-mail to Marcia Allina, Program Associate.
