This report is a compilation of investigations by Human Rights Watch from 1990 to 1995 on women's human rights violations. It is based on the work of many staff members and consultants of the Women's Rights Project and the regional divisions of Human Rights Watch, who researched and wrote the initial reports from which the case studies in this volume are adapted.
Contributors to this volume include: Aziz Abu-Hamad, Cynthia Brown, Allyson Collins, Patti Gossman, Jeannine Guthrie, LaShawn Jefferson, Robin Kirk, Sarah Lai, Robin Levi, Juan Méndez, Michael McClintock, Ivana Nizich, Binaifer Nowrojee, Regan Ralph, Lenee Simon, and Dorothy Thomas.
This report was edited by Sarah Lai and Regan Ralph of the Women's Rights Project, with invaluable editorial advice from Cynthia Brown, Michael McClintock and Juan Méndez of Human Rights Watch. Sonja Lichtenstein and Evelyn Miah provided production assistance.
We wish to express our deep gratitude to and admiration for the numerous advocates of women's human rights around the world who helped make this report possible, and particularly to the women and girls who spoke out about abuses they have experienced in order to make change.
This report was made possible in part by funds granted to Robin Levi through a fellowship program sponsored by the Charles H. Revson Foundation. The statements and views expressed in the text of this report are solely the responsibility of Human Rights Watch.
