Researcher, Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Rights Program

Carl Collison is a researcher in the LGBT rights program, and a freelance journalist, photographer and filmmaker, who focuses specifically on producing LGBTIQ-related content from across Africa. He was shortlisted for the 2018 Gerald Kraak Award and Anthology, which celebrates excellence in queer writing and photography from across Africa and has authored essays and short stories for books including, They Called Me Queer (Kwela Books) and Gendered Voices, Feminist Visions (Oxford University Press). Africa-wide LGBTIQ-related short films (and photographic exhibitions) he has put together have been screened by the Swedish Embassy (South Africa), Brighton Pride (UK) and the 2020 inaugural Africa-wide Pride Afrique as well as film festivals in Argentina, Kenya, Canada, Brazil and Mozambique.
